We all want to be happy. We would like to feel good, avoid pain and achieve our goals. However, our human nature often conflicts with this ambition- we humans seem to be much better at disturbing and defeating ourselves; instead of feeling good, we are more likely to worry, feel guilty and get anxious and depressed. We put ourselves down, and feel shy, hurt or self-pitying. We get jealous, angry, hostile and bitter, or suffer anxiety, tension and panic. Different people react in different ways to the same situation.
External events – whether in the past, present or future – cannot influence the way we feel or behave until we become aware of and begin to think about them. Conscious thoughts are those we are aware of. Subconscious thoughts are beneath our awareness and it is here, in our subconscious memory system that we hold much of our deeply held attitudes and beliefs. Our beliefs may be rational or irrational. Irrational beliefs often manifest as demands that we make on ourselves or they might be ideas of how we wish others and the world to be (such as “I must receive love from others in order to feel good about myself”). This becomes problematic when those irrational beliefs guide the way we react to the circumstances we face in everyday life.
Once we accept that our reactions are the result of our beliefs, we can begin to
analyse and change some of our irrational beliefs into more rational ones.We can
start building a more useful philosophy and help ourselves feel and behave better.
